The following is an attempt to improve communication between the judges of our breed,
and the people who show under them.
1.) Are you an active breeder of German
Shepherd Dogs? Do you have a kennel name ?
I'm an active breeder and my Kennel name is Richterslust German Shepherds
2.) How long have you been in the breed?
When and how did you get started? Are you affiliated with any clubs?
I started with a pet shepherd in 1957 but didn't get hooked n showing til 1966. I've
been a member of the GSDC of Southern Nevada since 1967. I've held many offices in the club from President to grounds
chairman. I've also been a parent club member since about that same time.
3.) How long have you been judging the breed?
I've been approved to judge since 1976.WOW!!!! Time goes fast when you're having
fun.
4.) How many times a year do you judge German
Shepherds?
I judge 1 or 2 times a year. Mostly on the west coast.
5.) Over the last 2 years has the number
of shows?
The number of shows I do has remained about the same every year.
6.) Have you ever judged the National Specialty?
If yes, when and what classes ?
I have never been asked to do a national specialty although I have done a futurity
in the Northwest region.
7.) Do you judge at both all-breeds and
specialties, which do you prefer ?
I have no preference as to judging specialties as opposed to all breeds as long as I
have a large all breed ring. I always ask the show super. on a large ring .
8.) Do you have a color preference?
I have no color preference as long as the pigment is good pigment.
9.) What importance do you place on condition
of plush versus smooth coat? Please explain.
A plush coat can cover a lot of faults if the judge isn't
observant. I haven't a preference but with a smooth coat, "What you see is what you get".
10.) When judging the dog do you also judge
the handler? Please elaborate if possible.
I don't judge the handler but do watch them closely to make sure they're not covering
something that I should see.
11.) What importance do you place on missing
teeth?
The standard says missing teeth are a fault so I do penalize missing teeth although
I doubt if you were bitten by a dog with a missing premolar that you would notice that it was missing.
12.) How do you see bites today?
I find bites to be very good. I haven't seen a bad one in years.
13.) How do you see strength of ears?
I find strength of ears poor. It is especially evident at the national.
14.) Do you feel the GSD's temperament has
improved over the past 5 years?
Temperament has been very good over the last 5 years. A big improvement over the
previous 5.
15.) Do you consider temperament today to
be? Please explain.
See above
16.) Do you prefer a dog to be shown on
a loose lead?
I insist on seeing every dog around the ring one time on a loose lead.
17.) How would you rate the following in
sequence of importance? (On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest).
Coming and going 9
Side Gait 9
Temperament 10
Teeth 5
Coat 6
Pasterns, hocks, feet 8
Pigment 6
Structure 9
Shoulder and reach 8
Attitude 8
18.) Could you briefly describe your ring
procedure, and any changes you may incorporate between a small Vs large class
I have the class take a lap or two around the ring to get an overall impression
. I do individual exams and loose lead temperament test. NO DOUBLE HANDLING ALLOWED DURINGTEMPERAMENT TEST!!! I
try to have each dog lead the class around once before I make my final placing. If the class is a large one I
make a cut before I have each one in the lead.
19.) Do you think there should be an age
limit in placing points on a dog (i.e.dogs and bitches under 12 months of age)?
The animal that is closest to the standard should win regardless of age.
20.) If a dog is not exactly to the standard
in size, would you prefer slightly larger or smaller?
Everything else being equal, I would prefer the larger dog over a smaller one
21.) Do you think on average German Shepherd
Dogs are too extreme?
I don't think most of our dogs are too extreme
22.) In your opinion should double handling
be allowed?
Double handling should be allowed as long as it doesn't interfere with my judging
or with the spectators
(running over them or knocking them down).
23.) Should all select dogs, in your opinion,
be OFA (H&E)?
No answer. I do ofa all my own dogs
24.) When making the final selection, does
the dog with the most front reach usually win the class?
No I've judged dogs with a nice front but not much rear. They couldn't use
the nice front
25.) Do you feel more emphasis should be
put on the total package, and less on movement?
I feel that a dog that is the total package will move properly also.
26.) Do you think the German Shepherd Dog
standard should be changed?
I like the standard the way it is written.
27.) Do you think there should be any changes
in any of the existing rules concerning dog shows? If so, please elaborate
No change
28.) Is there a dog, whether alive now or
not, who to you typifies most closely the "ideal" German Shepherd Dog ? If yes, please explain and give
details
I've always felt that Yoncalla's Mike was as close to MY ideal as any dog I've seen
and Von Ivo's Blythe Spirit the ideal bitch.
29.) Do you feel that in general the quality
of the breed in this country is getting better or worse ? Please elaborate
I think its getting better all the time. I think most breeders work very hard to
make improvements. Unfortunately there are some new breeders and exhibitors that have a wrong idea as to what proper
movement is and breed to that wrong goal.
30.) Do you have a pet peeve about anything
owners or handlers do concerning the showing of dogs ?
I guess my pet peeve would be handlers that string the dog up or try to cover another
dog.
31.) Do you have any suggestions for owners
or handlers regarding anything they should ALWAYS do when showing under you ?
Owner and handlers had better be sure their animal is properly groomed. I've had
some shown under me that weren't and they lost.
32.) Do you have any suggestions for owners
or handlers regarding anything they should NEVER do when showing under you ?
Never throw your ribbon in the trash can in my presence.
33.) Do you have any advice for people who
are relatively new to showing and/or breeding?
Newbies should try to learn something new at every show. Find a successful, accommodating
breeder and pick their brain but keep an open mind
34.) Is there anything else you would like
to say about judging or about the German Shepherd breed today ? If so, please feel free to say it here
No Answer given
35.) Have you ever judged one the of the
greats? If so, can you give a rundown of this dog for the people who have not had the privilege to even see it.
